La Cafetera is a famous coffee shop on the Zona Colonial’s main shopping street, El Conde.  It has remained in business since opening in 1930, enduring revolutions and dictatorships.

Over its long history, La Cafetera has served many of the countries most important figures from writers and artists to lawyers and politicians.  There is an bohemian and intellectual feeling to the place. You’ll notice people discussing a book or the news or playing chess in the back, some of which have frequented the coffee shop for over 40 years.

While parts of La Cafetera are a bit run down, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s an old time place.  They serve great Dominican coffee and offer a selection of typical grilled sandwiches.
