The breathtaking ruins of the first hospital built in America… MORE
Constructed between 1503 and 1552 by orders of the Governor at the time, Fray Nicolás de Ovando and served not only as a hospital but also as a church.
The hospital, a combination of Gothic and Renaissance architecture served as a model for other hospitals throughout Spanish America. With its strong structure it was able to withstand centuries of attacks of pirates and earthquakes but was brought to ruins early in the 20th century by a hurricane.
Explore what remains of the hospital; cylindrical buttresses, dramatic elliptical arches and deteriorating walls. Be sure to watch your head as there are hundreds of pigeons flying around.
Address: Hostos between General Luperón and Las Mercedes, Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo.
