mercado modelo

A large arts and crafts market with all kinds of local gifts… MORE

On the edge of the Zona Colonial sits the Mercado Modelo, a large market oriented towards the tourists with many locals. Here you will find all kinds of gifts including large colorful painting, handmade jewelry, Mamajuana (a bottle filled with roots and spices used to season rum), carnival masks, local instruments and the famous faceless dolls (represent the mix cultural background of Dominicans).

While many of the items may seem mass produced, the market plays host for artists such as Giovanni Infante who has created his original paintings from a narrow corridor in the market for over 20 years.

Even though the market is big and a little overwhelming, it still is the place to buy gifts for friends and family.
