fortaleza ozama

The oldest fortress in The Americas… MORE

La Fortaleza was constructed on the banks of the Ozama River between 1502 and 1508 by order of Frey Nicolás de Ovando, Governor of Hispaniola and founder of Santo Domingo. Its strategic location overlooking both the Ozama River and the Caribbean Sea gave a perfect view of anyone trying to gain entry to the city.

In the 1930’s and 1940’s, the fortress served a different purpose, being used by Dominican dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo to hold political prisoners.

While there is not too much to see at the fortress, it is worth a quick visit to see the historic site and view of the city and Caribbean sea from on top of the Tower of Homage.
