El Conde is the only walking street in the Zona Colonial running from Calle las Damas (the first paved street in the Americas) to Parque Independencia (park that holds the remains of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic).

Twenty years ago this was the most vibrant shopping center in the city but unfortunately it is no longer the commercial hub it used to be. Today you will find a diverse range of people, both locals and tourist as well as vendors selling anything they can, from paintings and jewelry, mamajuana and cigars to belts and shoe shines.

While El Conde might not be the fanciest place in town it gives you a taste of some of the local culture and on the east side there are many restaurants with nice patios to sit outside and enjoy the day.
